SYRACUSE — Six years ago today, friends, family and colleagues gathered for the funeral of broadcast journalist Bill Leaf. And this morning, Leaf’s family has learned Bill’s killer, Matthew Benedict, has been denied parole by state officials. The decision means Benedict — who could have been released as early as next month — will remain behind bars for at least two more years. [More »]

SYRACUSE — Friends and family of former WSYR radio reporter Bill Leaf will have to wait at least another month before they learn whether the drunk driver who killed Leaf in 2006 will be paroled in February 2012. This is the second time Matthew Benedict’s initial parole hearing has been postponed. [More »]

Updated 12/1 – SYRACUSE — While it’s not uncommon to see “Syracuse University” mentioned by national networks like ESPN, those mentions had usually been for game highlights and other routine sports coverage typically afforded Division I schools. That all changed nearly two weeks ago, when ESPN and other networks converged on Syracuse to cover developments in the Bernie Fine case. And it’s been a two-way street, as local broadcasters have been honoring requests to assist stations in other parts of the country. [More »]

SYRACUSE – The long-awaited decision on parole for the man serving time for killing former Syracuse broadcaster Bill Leaf in 2006 has been postponed. A parole hearing for Matthew Benedict, 28, was supposed to be held today, but according to Bill’s sister Maria, the hearing has been postponed due to a “paperwork issue” on Benedict’s side. [More »]

SYRACUSE — Among TV stations, it was a fairly even split between channels 3 and 9 for the 2011 Best of Syracuse awards. On the radio side, 93Q (WNTQ) is the big winner. The awards were announced in today’s edition of the weekly Syracuse NewTimes newspaper. [More »]

SYRACUSE — When areas south and east of Syracuse suffered extreme flooding caused by rainfall from Tropical Storm Lee this week, TV stations sent crews south to document the damage. At least one local reporter was well-prepared, walking through water a few feet deep to track down flooding victims and get the story. [More »]

NEW YORK CITY — The countdown is on to Regis Philbin’s final broadcast, capping off nearly 30 years of co-hosting the show currently known as Live! With Regis and Kelly. During yesterday’s show, Philbin, who recently turned 80, announced his last day on the syndicated morning gabfest will be Friday, November 18. [More »]
