SYRACUSE — After a blackout lasting nearly three days, Verizon FiOS TV customers can once again watch NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) with their set top boxes. This, after Verizon and WSYR-TV owner Newport Television reached a new retransmission consent agreement late Sunday afternoon.

Updated 1/13 – SYRACUSE — ABC affiliate NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) has been blacked out from Verizon FiOS TV systems in the Syracuse area after Verizon’s retransmission consent deal with the station expired overnight. It’s all because Verizon and WSYR-TV’s parent company, Newport Television, have not been able to reach an agreement over how much Verizon should pay to carry Newport stations on its FiOS systems. 
SYRACUSE — By the end of the week, Verizon FiOS television customers could see NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) disappear from their lineups. Verizon’s rights to retransmit WSYR-TV expire on Thursday, January 12. As of Sunday night, WSYR-TV says talks are underway, but “we do not believe” a deal will be reached soon enough to avoid a blackout for FiOS customers.
SYRACUSE — The same week Rob Cartwright joins NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) as the station’s next news director, comes word that two staffers are leaving the ABC affiliate. News reporter Jan Carabeo and Bridge Street executive producer Maggie Sliter are both moving onto new jobs in other markets. 
SYRACUSE — Chalk it up as another benefit of DTV multicasting: Syracuse viewers looking to turn their sets into virtual fireplaces this Christmas will have at least two choices. WSYR-DT 9.2 and WCNY-DT 24.4 will each broadcast their own burning yule log video non-stop starting at noon on Christmas Eve. If your TV has picture-in-picture, all the merrier! 
SYRACUSE — Viewers have been asking, and NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) today explained the noted recent absence of longtime anchor Rod Wood. He’s recovering after “a minor surgical procedure,” according to a statement released by the station this afternoon.
Updated 12/6 with WSYR press release – SYRACUSE — Nearly seven months after Jim Tortora vacated the News Director’s office at NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV), there’s now word of a new leader for the ABC affiliate’s news department. Reliable sources tell CNYTVNews.com that the new boss will be Rob Cartwright, who comes to Syracuse after three years as Assistant ND at The CW affiliate in Dallas. 
Updated 12/1 – SYRACUSE — While it’s not uncommon to see “Syracuse University” mentioned by national networks like ESPN, those mentions had usually been for game highlights and other routine sports coverage typically afforded Division I schools. That all changed nearly two weeks ago, when ESPN and other networks converged on Syracuse to cover developments in the Bernie Fine case. And it’s been a two-way street, as local broadcasters have been honoring requests to assist stations in other parts of the country.
ALBANY — Former NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) reporter Jennifer Lewke, who left the Syracuse ABC affiliate earlier this year, is back on television. Our thanks to an observant CNYTVNews.com reader, who spotted a report from Lewke yesterday on CBS 6 (WGRB) in Albany.
SYRACUSE — If she’s lucky, NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) reporter Racquel Asa won’t have to do any more live shots in mounds of lake effect snow. TVSpy.com says Asa is one of three new hires at ABC affiliate WFTV in Orlando, Florida. She’s expected to report for duty in the Sunshine State “early next month.” |
