SYRACUSE — When it comes to local television news, the Carrier Dome is usually the domain of sports reporters and sports anchors. But ever since the Bernie Fine story broke about two weeks ago, stations have been changing their usual staffing arrangements to cover the developments.

Updated 12/1 – SYRACUSE — While it’s not uncommon to see “Syracuse University” mentioned by national networks like ESPN, those mentions had usually been for game highlights and other routine sports coverage typically afforded Division I schools. That all changed nearly two weeks ago, when ESPN and other networks converged on Syracuse to cover developments in the Bernie Fine case. And it’s been a two-way street, as local broadcasters have been honoring requests to assist stations in other parts of the country. 
SYRACUSE — Our congratulations to Brian Erb, who recently marked his 40th anniversary as a news photographer with TV-3. We’re careful not to say he’s worked at “WSTM-TV” for the past 40 years — not just because WSTM, WTVH and WSTQ now collectively call themselves “CNYCentral” — but because WSTM-TV wasn’t known by those call letters when Erb started.
SYRACUSE — Among TV stations, it was a fairly even split between channels 3 and 9 for the 2011 Best of Syracuse awards. On the radio side, 93Q (WNTQ) is the big winner. The awards were announced in today’s edition of the weekly Syracuse NewTimes newspaper. 
SYRACUSE — When areas south and east of Syracuse suffered extreme flooding caused by rainfall from Tropical Storm Lee this week, TV stations sent crews south to document the damage. At least one local reporter was well-prepared, walking through water a few feet deep to track down flooding victims and get the story. 
SYRACUSE — The CNY Central group of TV stations (NBC-3/WSTM, CBS-5/WTVH and CW6/WSTQ-LP) has multiple newsroom job openings posted online right now. The positions include Director/Operator, Internet Managing Editor, Producer, and Producer/Anchor. There are also openings in the sales department. SYRACUSE — Next time you’re at the supermarket, look for CNY Central (WSTM/WTVH/WSTQ-LP) chief meteorologist Wayne Mahar. You’ll find him, most likely, near the checkouts. He’s the cover story for the August/September 2011 issue of 55 Plus magazine. 
SYRACUSE — It’s been a big question for TV stations all over the country: what will you air when Oprah goes away? In Syracuse, that question is now definitively answered. ABC affiliate NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) will replace Winfrey’s 4pm hour-long timeslot with one of her own spinoffs: The Dr. Oz Show. 
UTICA — Television news outlets from Syracuse and Utica set their competitive differences aside yesterday, pooling their resources to provide live coverage of the funeral services for Oneida County Sheriff’s Deputy Kurt Wyman. Staffers, cameras, live trucks and other resources from WKTV, YNN, WSTM, WTVH and WSYR were combined as a single unit for yesterday’s coverage. 
Updated 11:15pm — The WTVH transmitter has been fixed. The transmitter of the CBS affiliate had a problem which forced the station to go off-air for several hours today. |
